A whopping 69% of drivers in Swansea have been affected by aggression on the roads, making it the UK’s road rage capital.

That’s according to research released by MoneySuperMarket, which also found that almost half of Brits have been a victim of road rage. 80% have been sworn at, a third have been followed or intimidated, with a worrying 15% threatened with violence.

But, while Swansea might have its fair share of raging drivers, things are more pleasant in other parts of Wales. The coastal town of Aberystwyth has the fewest instances of road range – ‘just’ 29% of drivers have experienced some form of aggression while driving.

MoneySuperMarket spoke to 2,000 drivers across the UK and found that tailgating is seen as the most annoying driving behaviour, followed by not indicating, using a mobile phone at the wheel and throwing litter out of a car window.

Young people are the most frequent victims and perpetrators of road rage, with 65% of drivers aged 18 to 25 being on the receiving end of hostility behind the wheel, compared to less than half of those over the age of 55.

Tom Flack, editor-in-chief at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Road rage appears to be a growing concern on our roads, with over half the nation feeling its effects in some form.

“We can all be excused for sometimes getting a little hot under the collar behind the wheel, but when a simple irritation turns into something more – such as physical threats or acts of violence – it can increase the risk of road incidents, which has implications for both your safety and potentially your finances.”
