A Devon motorist has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after crashing his car when he “swerved to avoid an octopus”.

The incident happened on Tuesday 5th February on the A381 between Malborough and South Milton.

When they arrived at the scene, police found an overturned vehicle in a ditch. The car is believed to have crashed through a hedge after leaving the busy road.

Local force Kingsbridge Police tweeted: “Emergency services are currently dealing with a single vehicle RTC.

“The driver stated that he swerved to avoid an octopus.”

Police added that a 49-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, with the driver being checked over by paramedics.

The male, from Salcombe, has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries, according to the BBC.

While octopuses are known to be on the shores off Devon and the south coast of England, it would be quite remarkable if the creature had managed to crawl several miles from the coast to find itself at the site of the crash.

Unsurprisingly, given the unusual nature of this incident, users soon took to Twitter to joke about it, although Devon and Cornwall Police were quick to point that drug-driving “can be just as dangerous as drink-driving”.

Police said they found no evidence of an octopus at the scene.
